Bulk carriers are commercial vessels designed to transport dry bulk cargo without packaging. Instead of being transported in containers or individual packages, bulk cargo is loaded directly into the vessel's cargo holds.

Typical bulk cargoes include iron ore, coal, grain, cement, minerals, and other dry commodities.

Structure of Bulk Carriers

Bulk carriers are equipped with large cargo holds located along the main body of the vessel. These holds are generally fitted with large, strong hatch covers designed to protect the cargo from weather and sea conditions.

Some bulk carriers are equipped with their own cargo cranes and handling equipment, while others depend on shore-based equipment for loading and unloading operations.
